Ways to Re-purpose Your Old Technologies
Upon returning from the military after being away for 10 years, I naturally went to visit my parents who still live in my childhood home. Walking through the house and being greeted by old familiar smells, I was quickly brought back to memories that were pushed aside by the responsibilities of life. While pondering my memories, I wandered up to the attic where many of my old belongings sat in bins, just waiting to be rediscovered. Many items brought back subtle memories, and I would place them back in for another long stay in the bin. I then found my electronics, a bin full of hours of my life. Not only my life, but the lives of many friends who spent countless sleepless nights loaded full of caffeine, sugar, and exploding excitement as we dove into computers and video games.
Technology is quickly progressing and many of our electronics may seem outdated and only deserve a trip to the trash dump. Before throwing out your electronics, I would encourage you to consider giving a second life to your devices. Repurposing or utilizing old technologies is an economical way to reduce waste and help our environment.
Here are some ideas for giving a second life to your memorable tech:
Donate or Give Away:
If your old technology is still functional but you no longer need it, consider donating it to schools, charities, or organizations that can make use of it. You can also give it to friends or family members who might find it useful.
Home Network Backup:
Convert an old computer or external hard drive into a network-attached storage (NAS) device. This can be used for backing up your files and media, sharing files within your home network, or even hosting your own private cloud storage.
Media Center:
Transform an old computer into a media center by connecting it to your TV. Load it with media player software to stream movies, TV shows, and music from your local storage.
Security Camera Monitor:
Convert an old smartphone or tablet into a security camera monitor. There are apps available that can turn your device into a surveillance camera, allowing you to keep an eye on your home remotely.
E-Reader:
If you have an old tablet or smartphone with a decent display, repurpose it as an e-reader. Load it with e-books or use it to read articles and online content without straining your eyes on a small phone screen.
Smart Home Controller:
Depending on the capabilities of your old devices, you might be able to turn them into smart home controllers. Many smart home platforms allow you to control lights, thermostats, and other devices from a central hub.
Educational Tools:
Old computers can be loaded with educational software for children or used to introduce kids to basic coding and programming concepts.
Experimental Platform:
Use old devices as experimental platforms for trying out new software, testing updates, or learning about technology without risking your primary devices.
Digital Photo Frame:
Repurpose old tablets or monitors as digital photo frames to display your favorite memories as a rotating slideshow.
Home Server:
If you have some technical knowledge, you can set up a home server using an old computer. This can host your personal website, run game servers, or serve as a development environment.
DIY Projects:
Get creative! Old electronics can be disassembled for parts that can be used in various DIY projects, from building robots to creating art installations.
Don't Forget Recycling:
If your old technology is beyond repair or repurposing, make sure to recycle it properly. Many electronics contain hazardous materials, so recycling ensures they're disposed of responsibly.
Before repurposing, consider wiping your old devices of personal data and information to protect your privacy and security. With a bit of ingenuity, your old technology can find new life and serve a variety of useful functions in your home or workspace.
