Has My Device Been Hacked?

As a Managed Service Provider, the security of client devices and networks is at the top of our list. Not everyone works with electronics full-time like we do here at Tech by Dale, and most small businesses are unsure how to tell if their accounts or devices have been hacked and compromised. Detecting whether your computer has been hacked can be challenging, as modern hackers often use sophisticated techniques to hide their presence. Don’t be scared, take a deep breath and review below some signs that might indicate your computer has been compromised.

What SYMPTOMS Do I Look for?

  1. Unusual System Behavior: If you notice your computer is acting strangely, such as sudden slowdowns, crashes, or unexpected restarts, it could be a sign of unauthorized access.

  2. Unknown Processes or Programs: Check your task manager for any unfamiliar processes or applications running in the background. Hackers might use malicious software that disguises itself as legitimate programs.

  3. High Network Activity: If your internet connection is unusually slow or you notice a significant increase in data usage, it could indicate that malware or a hacker is using your computer for unauthorized activities.

  4. Changed Passwords: If you find that your passwords have been changed without your knowledge, especially for important accounts like email, social media, or financial services, it's a clear sign of a compromise.

  5. Suspicious Emails or Messages: If you receive messages or emails from your own accounts that you didn't send, or if your friends report receiving strange messages from you, your account might have been compromised.

  6. Security Software Disabled: If your antivirus or security software suddenly becomes disabled, it could be a sign that malware is actively working to avoid detection.

  7. Unwanted Browser Toolbars or Extensions: Hackers often use browser extensions to monitor your online activities or redirect your traffic. Check your browser for any unfamiliar extensions.

  8. Unauthorized Access: If you notice unauthorized access to your accounts, unauthorized transactions, or new accounts being created in your name, it's a strong indication of a security breach.

  9. Changes in System Settings: If settings on your computer have been altered without your consent, such as firewall settings, administrative privileges, or security settings, it could indicate a compromise.

  10. Strange Pop-ups or Advertisements: If you see an increase in unwanted pop-ups, ads, or browser redirects, your system might have been infected with adware or other malicious software.

  11. Files Modified or Deleted: If you find that your files have been modified, encrypted, or deleted without your consent, it might be a ransomware attack or other form of compromise.

  12. Unusual Account Activity: Check your online accounts for any unusual activity, such as login attempts from unfamiliar locations or devices.

My Computer Has These Symptoms, Now What?

  1. Disconnect from the Internet: If you believe your computer is compromised, disconnect from the internet to prevent further communication between the hacker and your computer.

  2. Run Security Scans: Use your antivirus and anti-malware software to perform thorough scans of your system to detect and remove any malicious software.

  3. Change Passwords: Change passwords for all your accounts, especially critical ones. Use strong, unique passwords for each account.

  4. Update Software: Make sure your operating system, software, and security programs are up to date, as updates often include security patches.

  5. Seek Professional Help: If you're unsure how to proceed or suspect a serious breach, consider seeking help from Tech by Dale for assistance.

Remember that prevention is key. Regularly updating your software, using strong passwords, being cautious about downloading files and clicking on links, and keeping your security software up to date can significantly reduce the risk of your computer being hacked. As mentioned earlier, not everyone is comfortable with diagnosing their device, but don’t be overwhelmed, there are options! Reach out to Tech by Dale and we would be happy to assist and work with your business to alleviate your stress.
