What Is the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark—and Why Should You Care?

As smart devices become more common in our homes and workplaces—think smart TVs, thermostats, doorbell cameras, and even lightbulbs—so does the risk of those devices becoming a gateway for cyberattacks. That’s why the U.S. government is rolling out a new Cyber Trust Mark to help you make safer tech choices.

Let’s break it down.

What Is the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark?

The U.S. Cyber Trust Mark is a new labeling system created by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to help consumers identify smart devices that meet high cybersecurity standards. Think of it like a nutrition label—but instead of calories and sugar, it tells you how secure the device is.

This mark will appear as a special shield logo (sometimes with a QR code) on the packaging of certified devices. Scanning the QR code will show up-to-date details about the device’s cybersecurity features.

Why Was This Certification Created?

As the Internet of Things (IoT) exploded—with everything from door locks to refrigerators going online—the security of these devices hasn’t always kept up. Vulnerabilities in smart devices have been exploited by hackers to steal data, hijack systems, or even create massive botnets.

To address this growing threat, the FCC, along with the Biden-Harris Administration, launched the Cyber Trust Mark initiative. The goal is to help consumers make informed decisions, while pushing manufacturers to prioritize security from the ground up.

How Does a Device Get the Cyber Trust Mark?

Manufacturers must voluntarily meet strict cybersecurity criteria based on standards developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). These include:

  • Strong default passwords (no more “admin” or “1234”)

  • Regular software updates and patches

  • Data protection and encryption

  • Incident detection and response capabilities

Independent labs will test devices for compliance before they earn the mark.

When Will We See the Trust Mark?

The Cyber Trust Mark program is expected to officially launch in late 2024. Some manufacturers may begin rolling out certified devices around that time, with wider adoption expected in 2025.

What This Means for You

Whether you're a homeowner setting up a smart security system, or a small business investing in connected tech, the Cyber Trust Mark makes it easier to:

  • Compare products confidently

  • Avoid insecure devices

  • Protect your personal or company data

If you're shopping for new equipment and see the Cyber Trust Mark, you’ll know the manufacturer has taken meaningful steps to secure your device.

What If a Device Doesn’t Have the Trust Mark?

Devices without the Cyber Trust Mark aren’t automatically unsafe—but they may not meet the latest standards. If a device lacks the mark, ask yourself:

  • Does the manufacturer provide regular security updates?

  • Are there clear privacy policies in place?

  • Does it use strong authentication features?

And if you’re unsure, we are here to help evaluate your tech choices and recommend secure alternatives.
